Today we’ll discuss how the nervous system works and will map the brain.
We’ll finish the film “Incredible Human Machine” and watch the section about the nervous system.
This is all in preparation of Monday’s sheep brain dissection, Wednesday’s eyeball dissection and Friday’s discussion of the teenage brain.
If students miss class today, please watch this video and email Mrs. H with a short description of how the nervous system sends signals TO the body and how the brain picks UP signals.
Today we’ll start with a quiz over the functions of the digestive system, admire its length with a yarn model, and then briefly discuss the Urinary System/ Kidneys to answer the question, “If all the nutrients and water from our food is absorbed in the small and large intestines, how does pee work/ where does it come from?”
To answer this question, we’ll watch this clip of the kidneys doing their jobs.
Finally, we’ll start our discussion of the brain and nervous system by watching the last part of the The Incredible Human Machine video.
Coming up: Friday we wont have class due to the field trip (rocket launching), so the next time we see each other for science we’ll be mapping out the brain in advance of our next dissection (Monday June 5th) of the brain.
Wednesday the 7th will be the eyeball dissection, we’ll wrap up our study of the nervous system on Friday June 9th.

Today we are going over the digestive system, which is way more complicated and interesting than one would initially think!
- First, we’ll do a rocket check and stow them for the upcoming field trip.
- Next, students will have a few minutes to try to figure out the function of some of the parts of the digestive system.
- Then, you’ll experiment on yourself (Ritz cracker lab) to learn a little about mechanical digestion.
- We’ll watch the clip of The Incredible Human Machine dealing with digestion
- We’ll continue with the Ritz Cracker analogy, this time modeling digestion.
- We’ll demonstrate the length of the digestive system.
- We’ll end with a little “Once Upon a Swallow” quiz
Quick Quiz Wed over the following:
- What happens in the mouth?
- Teeth grind food into small pieces, saliva starts to break it down further
- What happens in the small intestine?
- Food is further broken down and separated, and nutrients absorbed into bloodstream
- What happens in the large intestine?
- Water is removed.
Today we’ll start with a practice quiz for Wednesday’s quiz over the Skeletal and Muscular Systems.
Then, we’ll pass around the genetic disorder books and review the chicken wing lab.
We’ll wrap up our learning about the skelo-muscular system with a quick worksheet that we’ll do together.
And by the way, grades are finally updated!
Finally, its on the respiratory system! We’ll build model lungs on Wednesday, so please remember to bring in plastic bottles. I have zero so far 🙁

-Wednesday and Friday we’ll be completing a variety of activities to introduce the basic concept that all human body systems work together to maintain homeostasis, and that all systems are part of a singular unit that keeps us alive.

Hi 7th graders! Friday is the UW engineering field trip so I wont be seeing you all.
I’d like to remind you all to make sure to have your genetic disorder project completed by next Monday, April 24th. Please plan accordingly.
Monday we’ll talk a bit about Human Body Systems and complete a pre-assessment of knowledge. We’ll start with the Skelo-muscular system (chicken wing dissection will be our first, and it is a fun one!).
Students will receive 20 minutes of classtime today to work on (and hopefully finish!) their Genetic Disorder ‘chapter’ for our class book. The last post contains the template to fill in for this book. Due to all of the family travels and such, I’d like to recommend that students complete this project by Friday (email to Mrs. H to print, or print and turn in), but I wont be grading the assignment until the first Monday after break (Monday, April 24th). Please plan accordingly.
After the Genetic Disorder work time, we’ll wrap up our study of heredity by completing a self-assessment, then we’ll talk a bit about Human Body Systems and complete a pre-assessment of knowledge.
Friday students will be watching an amazing film on the human body, and after break we’ll look at the Skelo-muscular system.
Today everybody will be writing a page in our genetic disorder book, based on the disorder they “inherited”. Take today to work on your page (Due Monday after break if not completed in class). You can have half of class on Wednesday to work on this, as well. Template is here: genetic disorder research project
Wednesday: Wrap up inheritance and start human body systems unit.
*Family Pedigrees are due today. We’ll post them in the hallway at the start of class.
*Today we will finish up our genetics/ heredity unit by looking at the chapter entitled “Human Inheritance” in the class textbook (page 110-116) and completing the worksheet in the student packet.
At the end of class, I will reveal to you “your genetic disorder” that you will be inheriting. You’ll be able to spend Friday researching this disorder with Ms. Brown, who will be subbing. On Monday of next week I’ll discuss what you’ll be doing with your research (for now, just get to know your genetic disorder).
The Genetic Disorder Assignment will be due Wednesday of next week, after which we start talking about Human Body Systems!
