Second Graders collaborated on creating a pretend student. One of the students named him Eric. We talked about how sometimes kids try on using unkind words and we pretended to do that with Eric. As students said unkind things, I slowly crumpled up Eric. Once Eric was a crumpled ball, we tried to help him get back to the way he was (which was impossible). Second graders were insightful and able to use their inference skills to realize that when unkind words are used, they stay with that person and can impact their lives forever.
